Pearl's Premium grass seed, sold at stores such as Whole Foods, is a grass seed that is marketed as being earth-friendly and ultra low maintenance. The manufacturers say that the low maintenance requirements save consumers time and money. For example, because the grass only needs to be mowed once per month, consumers save the costs associated with mowing; and because the grass has limited water requirements, consumers don't spend as much money watering their grass.

It's hard to imagine anything more innocuous than a lush suburban lawn. That's what 63-year-old entrepreneur Jackson Madnick used to think -- until a golf course killed his cat.

His cat, Kitty, sickened and died 14 years ago. A groundskeeper at the nearby links told Madnick that many local animals had been dying off from chemicals used to treat the grass there.

Grass seed innovator may disrupt industry

FALL RIVER, Mass. — Lawn care is a $40 billion business, and Jackson Madnick's low maintenance, drought-resistant grass seed is turning the industry on its head.
